Q: Holiday Decorations.......?
Why do people put up Christmas decorations outside before Thanksgiving? They turn on the lights next door while I still have a scarecrow and pumpkin sitting in my front yard. Why do people start so early?? Let's let one Holiday happen before we go on to the next......

A: Some people regard this as the season of lights, from November through January. It really has nothing to do with a specific holiday although some may go overboard. One year my neighbor had a stuffed turkey sitting on a toilet (no kidding, I think they brought it out of their house, didn't know what to do with it so they put a turkey on top to conceal it)in her front yard. It froze there in the snow and we had to look at it the whole winter. She also decorates her front lawn with a zillion santa's. Fortunately she's moving this year.

Q: What are your thoughts on holiday decorations and separation of church and state?
I mean any holiday, not just Christmas. Personally I love decorations and I think they are fun. I am a Christian and I would not be offended if we had decorations that represented other religious holidays. That would mean more fun and diverse decorations. I would like to hear from people who disagree with me and tell me why I'm wrong. I think as a Christian my ideas on the topic are a little biased and I need help to see the other side of the argument. Thanks for your help!

A: I think it's sad to take away holiday decorations and stuff, not only in town but especially from younger children in schools and such. So I think that if that's the way they want it they should start the separation of church and state by making government workers work on holidays. Let's see how well that goes over then. After all why should government workers get all Sundays and holidays off? Make them work a few Sundays, Easters and Christmases and see what happens. Grrrrr makes me so mad!!!!

Q: How do I keep toddlers away from holiday decorations?
They are 2 year old twins and into EVERYTHING. I dont know how to keep them out of the decorations at my family's house arounf holiday time. I don't like putting them in time out yet unless they really did something bad but I don't want them to break anything either.

A: lol! i think your only option is to put everything up high!! sorry, but i just can't think of any other way...

Q: When is it appropriate to start putting up and taking down holiday decorations?
I have some neighbors who have already decked out their houses in Christmas lights, yet there are other houses who still have their jack-o-lanterns still out. What is the proper protocol for putting up and taking down holiday decorations?

A: Be the first to sport July 4th stuff. Put lawn chairs out with a table that has patriotic paper goods and those stupid plastic Uncle Sam hats. Light sprinklers, frolick in the streets, and launch fireworks in front of a tent made of American flags. (don't forget to put a pumpkin, menorah, christmas tree, and Ramadan stuff..) WoOoOoof it up!

Q: How much do you put into your Holiday decorations?
Are you a crazy fanatic about your Holiday decorations, or are you just laid back? I am thinking about my Christmas decorating & need some thoughts from those of you that just go All Out!!

A: I kind of go all out. This will be my first Christmas in my own apartment with my boyfriend and I'm in charge of decorating so I'm excited! I'm going to decorate the windows with lights and decor, put a light up wreath on my door, some wall decorations, red berry Christmas candles and centerpieces on my tables, a Christmas light up candy cane village on my TV stand and lastly the Christmas tree.

Q: What are your favorite magazine websites to shop for inexpensive gifts, holiday decorations ,house stuff ,etc.
For example: Terrysvillage.com, abcdistributing.com, orientaltradingcompany.com- sites like that. I am looking for cheap halloween, christmas, and other holiday decorations online.

A: I like to shop all year for sale stuff to give as gift for holidays & birthdays, & am on a tight budget as well. I love www.collectionsetc.com & they often have online sales & free shipping Also I go to www.americangreetings.com for a small annual fee you can download all kinds of greeting cards & also I love the 'Create & Print' section for craft stuff & making gift bags & projects If u r a member you can add up to 2 other people at a time to your account FREE. (Nice perk or gift if you have other crafty friends) I saw a great idea on Oprah once: she showed a Christmas tree After Christmas the family took off the ornaments & decorated it for New Years with hats, streamers, noisemakers, horns, etc Then for February; hearts & cupids & valentines And in March : St Patricks stuff April; Easter stuff May; spring stuff etc...etc...etc You get the picture It was really cute & you don't have to 'put up the tree' every year (shop "after the holiday $ale$ " for next years stuff) Another good place to shop www.lakeside.com however not as good for last minit shopping ( longer ship time & backorders) but still nice gifts & inexpensive! Also I like to print photos from www.flickr.com large sized & printed on glossy then framed in clearance priced frames from my local Walgreens At 'flickr' you can find beautiful photos of ANYTHING My sister's got a wall of framed Butterflies & Flowers Sorry about the long answer ( but Frugal is my middle name) and I hope you can use some of my tips!

Q: Should we have holiday decorations in public places or not?
Do you as a person think that we should have holiday decorations out in public places like the mall? Why or why not? Can you back it up with a fact or a statistic? If You can't that's ok I need everyones help on this question for my paper for school.

A: Yes, most definitely. I think you're trying to ask if we should have Christmas decoration in public places. This is also a YES answer. For those who are afraid of offending any other religion, then don't. Just remember, you can't please everyone. Some people don't like the color red, what are you going to do?

Q: When do you think it's appropriate to put up holiday decorations?
For Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas? I love the holidays and was just wondering when I can start setting up my decorations this year since now I have a home and I want to decorate it! Thanks.

A: Everyone has a different take on this. Mine? Halloween? OCT 1 (in sept I just have autumn - in general decor) Thanksgiving? (NOV 1)...again that's mostly just autumn decor anyway Christmas? Day AFTER Thanksgiving and not a day before. Easter I never do until a month before. Valentines Day I do two weeks before (and comes down day after) St. Patrick's Day I do two weeks before (and comes down day after)

Q: What is your reaction when you hear stories about people that get worked up about holiday decorations?
Around the holidays you often hear stories on the news or radio, about people who dont celebrate christmas, and how they are going to sue a company because the company has holiday decorations up or they say merry christmas instead of happy holidays I hate how it affects everyone else what do you think?.....

A: I roll my eyes and wonder how much better this world could be if people took their energy and used on things that would unite people instead of divide them.

Q: Is the day after Halloween to early to start putting up Holiday decorations and start jammin' Holiday Tunes?
Every year it seems like the holiday season gets shorter and shorter, so I'm thinking of getting it started early! Is tomorrow to early?

A: Which holiday? American Thanksgiving? Why don't you make it longer by continuing the celebration rather than starting early? Religiously speaking, it's advent before Christmas and the Christmas spirit can last through till the start of lent.

Q: What is the name of this desert tree/brush used for holiday decorations?
My mother in law has this tree/desert brush looking item that she says she got when she lived in California and she thinks it came from a desert. It is really smooth and a pale brown, almost like a river birch without the bark. It also looks like a weathered tree from the river or ocean. It is mounted to a platform that allows it to stand up and she decorates it for different holidays. Any help would be appreciated!

A: Is it a bonsai tree?

Q: what does Target do with their i-store holiday decorations? are they available for purchase or for free?
I love some of the Christmas decorations they have in the stores right now (ie, they hang from the ceilings). I meant "in-store" decorations.

A: ok this is what you do. New years eve do not go out do not go partying (youll need your wits about you) Camp out behind your local target in the dumpster. In the morning when the employees begin to throw away the decorations pop out scream and beat the employee into submission. Grab his sack of decorations and run like a maniac.

Q: How can I keep holiday decorations organized during the 11 months of the year that they are not in use?

A: Attic storage is ideal for delicate -- and not so delicate -- holiday decorations. Once largely limited to Christmas ornaments and lights, decorations these days may include fake skeletons for Halloween, Thanksgiving centerpieces and candles, and even Fourth of July banners and yard decorations. Themed decorating has become a part of just about every major holiday. To make sure your decorations stay in good shape the rest of the year, dedicate a corner of the attic to them. If you use decorations for only one or two holidays, just stack them in a column of boxes. If you have a bigger collection of holiday decorations, use standing shelves to keep everything in one place. Don't store decorations loose. You can find a specialized box or container for just about any type of decoration. For instance, wreaths can be put away in protective storage bags or octagonal boxes custom made for wreaths. Ornaments: You'll find an amazing diversity of options when it comes to storing Christmas ornaments. Specialized boxes abound, most with individual compartments for each ornament. You can select from padded cardboard boxes, fancy molded-plastic units, or even wood chests. Choose ornament boxes based on how much you're willing to spend and how precious your collection is -- wood chests offer the most protection but cost the most. Plastic is durable and will absorb shocks when the box is moved around, but if there is little traffic in the attic, a cardboard ornament box may provide all the protection you need. The most important element in your choice is buying a container that will store the number of ornaments you have. Decorative lights: Strings of festive lights have long been a part of the Christmas celebration, and tangled masses of light strings have been the aftermath of many a holiday season. Keep your strings of lights tidy with a spool light-string organizer. If you have several strings, such as outdoor sets and the sets you use on the tree, you can buy special plastic storage boxes with slots for each organizer and cavities for extra bulbs. Q: Any ideas for Holiday decorations for my aquariums?
I want to decorate my fish & turtle tanks for Xmas but I can't find any pet supply places that carry them. Maybe I could go to a craft store & buy a ceramic Xmas tree? Any suggestions? Maybe a nice snow globe? Then again I guess I couldn't shake it while it's in there.

A: Unless you can find some specialty pet shop that sells guaranteed aquarium-safe decorations, it's best to only decorate the outside of the tank. If you wanted to get creative you could put decorations on the outside of the glass, or use the cling-film decorations used for windows. In my experience, most Christmas decorations are cheap plastic crap and that doesn't raise my confidence level for using it in an aquarium.

Q: When do they put Holiday Decorations up in New York City?
Like the big christmas tree and everything? What's the date?

A: The day before or of Thanksgiving - right in time for Black Friday. The Tree is put up on or around the same time, and the official lighting occurs the first week of December. It's actually RARELY on a weekend however - it was a Tuesday this year, and last year was the same. They do this so that tourists don't mob the Rockefeller Center blind.
