Q: What are some good arts and crafts ideas for children ages 5-12?
I am starting a community program for the children in my apartment complex. It will begin in two weeks. I am trying to come up with as many ideas for arts and crafts activities and othe games and activities. If you could give me some ideas and how to do it . Thank you.

A: My mom does this really fun activity with play-doh. You could even make your own to make more of an activity of it. Anyway, everyone has the same amount of play-doh and each a different color. Everyone divides their ball of play-doh in half and puts half in the center of the table. Then, using the other half, they sculpt something based on a theme (something you'd see in a garden, something you'd see downtown, etc.). Set a time limit (2 minutes is about right) and then when the time is up, without talking, everyone moves left one space. They now have someone elses sculpture in front of them. They try to figure out what it could be and then using the play-doh in the middle, add on to it. Do this again and again until each person is back in their original spots. Then, have each person talk about what they started to sculpt and what they now have. It's really a lot of fun and a good activity for all ages.

Q: Good arts and crafts for children ages 5-12 for the month of March - besides St Patrick's Day stuff?
I need some arts and crafts projects, the kids I work with are pretty sick of watercolor and drawing pictures on the days I can't think of anything really good! We've got a wide variety of materials. Any suggestions would be great, they don't HAVE to be associated with the month of March; anything unique would be cool to hear!

A: This is a diversified age group. Is it all one class, ie after school? You could make 3-D collages using strips of colored paper of varoius sizes, pinch, wrap, and wrinkle before gluing on to a strong colored paper. Make, they are called something like Los Dios, with two crossed popcycle and wrapped with several colors of yarn for varied patterns. You can find these in many kids craft books. Another craft to use is surface rubbing using the side of a crayon on manilla paper, either inside or outside; cement floor, heat grating, anything with a 3-D surface. I've used all these and the kids had fun!

Q: What are some neat activity/crafts books for children?
I want some books that have neat craft ideas for me to use with children I nanny for. Something that maybe a teacher would have to use for craft projects. The children I nanny for are 4 and 7. Thanks

A: I taught for a while but the best books I'd recommend aren't teaching books - in terms of art and craft books, I'd recommend the books published in conjunction with the Art Attack series in the UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=art+attack). These are fun ideas but aren't too complicated and tend to use things which are either found in the home or on the odd occasion they do use other things, are things which are easy to source. If you're looking for art and craft books however, the best book that I would recommend to anyone is the anti-colouring book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anti-colouring-Susan-Striker-Edward-Kimmel/dp/1407102710/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1201556773&sr=8-1). This has lots of drawing related ideas for children to use their imagination and is great for children of both 4 and 7. I remember having this book when I was a child (at least 4 times at different ages) and my son had it for his birthday last year (he was 6) and loved it just as much as I did!

Q: Ideas for activities and crafts for medical play with children?
I am trying to think of crafts and activities I can do with children that use medical equipment. Equipment includes gauze, tounge depressors, gloves, masks... Anything that kids would be likely to see while they are in the hospital.

A: Oooo, LOADS of things! http://www.google.com/search?q=kids+crafts+gauze (cheesecloth is best for ghosts and cheaper, but gauze could be good too) http://www.google.com/search?q=kids+crafts+"tongue+depressors"+popscicle http://www.google.com/search?q=Halloween+crafts+gloves+latex+plastic http://www.google.com/search?q=kids+crafts+gloves All kinds of masks could be made with disposable dust masks or the tie-behind-the-head type (or make those from pleated fabric, with ties), though they're not likely to see those unless they go into operating rooms with their eyes open. Here are some other things they're likely to see: clear vinyl tubing (buy it cheap at hardware stores) plastic syringes (without needles, for squirting things --perhaps for squirting glue while making crafts too) up-and-down beds hospital gowns (open in back) nurses (dr's in) white coats clipboards stethoscopes, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, and pulse-taking watches pills (and liquids) meals under lids (to keep them warm) TV's & remotes roommates, and other kids in "playrooms" with craft/etc. activities "special" bathrooms/showers? or faucet handles Best of luck!... great idea. Q: What kind of arts and crafts project can I do involving three soda cans for children?
I'm a worker for a rec program and I want some ideas of crafts I can do with the children. One item at our disposable is soda cans and I'm looking for some ideas.

A: Well, you can make lots of things from the cans, but since its kids - and I'm assuming young kids - you wont want to do anything that involves cutting the cans open since that runs the serious risk of cuts from the thin metal edges. There are some options available for whole, uncut cans. They can be flattened and painted into the face of an animal or person the hole ends up being the mouth for the person or animal they create. Craft paint, pompoms, glitter, yarn etc. is used to decorate the flattened can. If they are older kids, they can crush the cans in different ways and make more imaginative creatures. A really pretty project is making the cans into luminarias - a sort of lantern for outdoors that holds a tea light. It can be made into a holiday theme too. The sides of the can are cut from top to bottom in strips and the can is partially collapsed, making a lantern. An adult will have to make the cuts once the child has drawn the pattern they want cut. Also, heres a link for a huge list of projects using recycled common objects that you may not have thought of - popsicle sticks, pringles cans, tuna cans, soup cans, egg cartons, straws, bottle caps, beans, etc. http://www.artistshelpingchildren.org/artforchildren.html

A: THIS TIME OF YEAR IT WOULD BE CUTE TO MAKE "HAND WREATHS". TRACE THEIR HANDS AND CUT THEM OUT ON YELLOW, BROWN, RED GREEN..ECT.(FALL COLORS) AND GLUE THEM TOGETHER TO MAKE A CIRCLE "WREATH". DO THIS WITH EACH CHILD AND YOU WILL HAVE LOTS OF LITTLE HAND WREATHS TO DISPLAY AT THE LIBRARY OR TO SEND HOME TO PARENTS. BELIEVE ME, PARENTS LOVE CRAFTS LIKE THESE. OR YOU COULD MAKE "TURKEY HANDS". TRACE THEIR HAND AND CUT THEM ON ON WHITE CONSTRUCTION PAPER. THE THUMB WILL BE THE TURKEY'S HEAD. (DECORATE TO GIVE HIM A FACE WITH A BEARD OR MAKE IT A HEN TURKEY)THE OTHER 4 FINGERS WILL BE THE TURKEY'S FEATHERS. LET THE CHILDREN COLOR THEM AS THEY WISH OR DO IT ALL IN FALL COLORS. THESE ARE SO CUTE. HOPE THESE IDEAS CAN BE OF SOME USE FOR YOU.

Q: i need helps with crafts for children?
can anyone help me? Okay i need some craft ideas for children from ages 6-11 that would be good that fall into the categories of thanksgiving, fall, & harvest if anyone can help me thank you so much!

A: Lots of things....I used to help with the kiddos when my kid was small. Take their hand, trace and put an eye on the thumb, let them color and make a turkey. Take old puzzle pieces, buy cut wood leaves, put a pin backing and have them glue the puzzle pieces to the leaf. Give each an orange bow to put on the pin after they are done...they are always so proud of this. Have them stack ice cubes. Yes, you can...you let them try without any salt and see what they can do. Then you give them salt and sprinkle it on and let them stack them...They sometimes get carried away with the salt, but all the kids are graduating this next year and they remember stacking ice cubes in 1st grade. Take those white work gloves and cut out felt pieces to resemble feathers and have them glue them on the gloves...makes a turkey, same as the hand. You can also use those satin leaves, take them off the stem and have the kids glue them on the gloves. Make a pinata...pumpkin of course. Balloon, starch (flour and water mix medium consistancy) pieces of paper and have them make the pinata by blowing up the balloon, that's the fun part, having things ready is the key for you. Once they dry, have them for the class party or for a birthday, nothing better than watching kids try to hit pinata's and they love them. Walmart carries the stuff to stuff inside the pinata. Have a contest and have some other group judge the pinatas, the best one gets ice cream or pizza for the whole class....or group.... Take tissue paper and make leaves that are stuffed and are able to be hung from the ceiling. Cut the leaves and the stems, have them color the stem in or cut them out, put tissue paper in between the two leaves and glue together...hang by thread...they really are beautiful if you get the right tissue paper. Paper sacks are wonderful to decorate for the guest for Thanksgiving to send home left overs...I keep the plastic containers from butter, sour cream and etc. Wrap in tissue paper and put leaves and pumpkins on it with a tag. Then I put the amount of left overs in them and put them in the bag with their names on it for the guest. The kids love to help with this, makes them a part of the holiday! Take a toilet paper holder, cut into sections. They make wonderful napkin ring holders, cover them with tissue paper or material, color of your choice, cut out leaves or pumpkins or whatever you want out of cardboard. Have the kiddo's color the items and then attach to the holder. They are truly pieces of art. They can do the same thing for the center piece, just stack up ward or in a shape that fits the holiday. Have fun!
