Q: Does anyone know where they have holiday christmas lights in southern california? I remember?
my mom and dad would take me to go see all the houses that have christmas lights up. But, I have been trying to find something on the internet but can't seem to find anything.
Oh I am looking for something near Inland Empire.. tx!
A: Where, specifically in So Cal? The Mission Inn at Riverside is beautiful.
Q: Holiday / Christmas lights installation...would you pay?
How much would you pay to have someone come and provide christmas lights, put them up for you, and then take them down in January? My husband is not handy enough to do it, and my son is seven and I know he would love it. My budget is about $500 that is what I feel comfortable with spending my husband doesn't care what I do, but I would like to know if you would do it if you could afford it and do you think a little kid would like it a lot?
A: Hmm, if this is a mutual decision between you and your spouse -- and you both do not mind the spending of $ for installing the lights -- then go for it.
As a Long Term Single Parent (and I did not have the budget for doing Christmas Lights on my Home), I got out the light strings, the inflatables, and yes, the Ladder and every year would put them up MYSELF and then take them down (and do the maintenance before I put them away).
Now that I'm getting older (and I am an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree) .. I am still doing the Christmas Lights myself -- subdued (just the bushes with net lights (in front of the house) and the Lights hanging from the Gutters). I don't use a ladder anymore, because there are hangers that I can apply from the ground level -- and just slip on and off those gutter hooks.
So ... for me, I just will keep doing this until I am too sore to do it anymore .. and then ... I'll most likely hire someone to put up my lights. (But I don't see that happening for many years yet).
Q: Is the trandition of Christmas Lights based on a pagan holiday?
by far the biggest celebration was roman holiday of "festival of lights" is on the winter solitice, is it true that Christians just added 3 days to make Dec 24 Christmas eve?
A: Yes. In fact, almost all of the traditions of Christmas were "stolen" (if you will) by the Christian religion from the pagan celebration of the winter solstice.
And, by the way, "pagan" doesn't mean satanic, nor does it mean "having no religion" in this context. Rather, in ancient Rome, pagans followed a polytheistic religion.
The winter celebration was called the festival of Saturnalia. "By the fourth century, the pagans were worshipping the god of the sun on December 25, and the Christians came to a decision: if you can't stop 'em, join 'em. They claimed (contrary to known fact) that the date was Jesus' birthday, and usurped the solstice holiday for their Church."
Lights were very much a representation of the stars and sun, as a way to celebrate the pleasures of life.

Q: Photograph Christmas Lights after dark?
Hi! I was fortunate enough to get invited to go to Disney World at Christmas time. I know they have some amazing holiday lighting, and I also know that it will be dark around 5pm. I have a Kodak V705 (point and shoot, with a lot of custom and preset functions, 10x optical zoom). Can you suggest some techniques for taking good pix of the lights after dark? Thanks!
A: hmmm i have only one tip... a longer exposure will make the lights and colors brighter... i don't have very much experience tho... also, is that a digital camera? if so, this tip might not work... sorry!!!
good luck, and have fun at disney world!!
Q: What year was the word Christmas banned and replaced with Holiday?
I'm 26, and I remember when towns, businesses, tv shows, and just about everyone said "Merry Christmas" and would talk about Christmas shoppers, Christmas lights, etc. Now when you see the world Christmas its a big deal and a little shocking. A lot of ads talk about holiday shopping, getting into the holiday spirit, and replace the words on Christmas songs with holiday.
When did this start? Who started it? Will the word Christmas be phased out and replaced with holiday in everything someday?
I know it wasn't offically banned, but it has basically been removed from everything you read or hear.
A: sometime in the 90's when people got concerned about offending people and being politically correct.
Q: Can somebody please post a link for some really ugly holiday/christmas sweaters? Possibly ones that light up?
I'm looking for a men's ugly sweater. I know there was a company in the late 80's that used to sell sweaters that had lights in them and twinkled, but they went bankrupt cause of lawsuits from people who washed the shirts and ruined the circuitry (cause there was no "dry-clean only" tag). Ideally I'd like something along these lines, and the uglier the better. Please post any useful links you can find. Thanks!

I'm not sure if they light up but they're pretty ugly!
Q: How many people decorate for the Christmas holiday with a tree, lights, knick-knacks, wreath, etc.?
My husband and I are a child-free couple and we know of a few other child-free couples who either do not decorate their house for Christmas or do just a bare minimum.
We, alright I, find that putting up a tree, trimming the halls with everything, lights, a wreath and all the rest of it are very time consuming. So I put out a couple of table runners, a mantle cover, and a few Christmas themed items, and of course our stockings (including one for our dog whom we call our spiritual child) and hubby puts up lights.
Recently a co-worker with two toddlers under the age of three, expressed to me that she thought that everyone, child-free or not, should put up ALL the Christmas stuff.
If we still get the feeling of Christmas without the tree isn't that what matters? Not the tree, the wreath and knickknacks in every room of the house??
A: Last year when I lived alone in a one bedroom apt I didn't put up anything for Christmas mostly because I wasn't home much. This year my fiance and I are living together and we have a 6 foot tree from walmart with only a few ornaments, a few xmas knick knacks, and our stockings. I don't think anyone should put up all the xmas stuff unless they want to. I personally don't think i would go all out with lights, tree, wreath, and the whole nine yards because as you said it is time consuming. All of those things also take up a lot of space when they are just useless items the other 12 months of the year. As long as you're happy with the amount of xmas in your home that's all that should be important. Christmas spirit isn't about decorations anyway.
