Q: Christmas Cards-Why do we give Christmas cards & how did that tradition\custom start?
Why do we give Christmas cards at Christmas, what does giving Christmas cards mean to you?

A: A form of Christmas card began in England first when young boys practiced their writing skills by creating Christmas greetings for their parents, but it is Sir Henry Cole who is credited with creating the first real Christmas card. The first director of London's Victoria and Albert Museum, Sir Henry found himself too busy in the Christmas season of 1843 to compose individual Christmas greetings for his friends. He commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley for the illustration. The card featured three panels, with the center panel depicting a family enjoying Christmas festivities and the card was inscribed with the message "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You." Giving Christmas cards gives me a chance to remember people that I don't see on a frequent basis.

Q: Wondering what to write in my christmas cards?
I work predominantly with women and was wondering what was best to put in any christmas cards I give. Those that I have received from women have all been "happy christmas, love from". Was wondering if it is a bad idea for a guy to put that in a card to a women. Just that putting simply "Happy christmas, from" seems a bit thoughtless. Any ideas?

A: The nicest thing I ever read in a card is "May your Christmas gift this year be the gift of loved ones near". It's beautiful but unfortunately not appropriate for everyone. Do what I do: at the start of the verse I put Dear Whoever, and at the end I sign my name.

Q: Does any one know how to display Christmas Cards?
I want to display my christmas cards but I don't want to tape them to the woodwork does anyone have any ideas that would be safe to the walls and woodwork? Also, anyone have any good craft ideas for last years cards?

A: The best option I've seen is to hang a piece of string like a laundry line near a wall then dangle or clothespin the cards to that. To avoid putting tape on the walls, you can use either poster putty or the 3M temporary hangers / hooks. For last year's cards, the only craft I've seen is one my kindergartener's class did -- they made placemats. They take a large sheet of construction paper, put cards or pieces of cards all over it, then cover both sides with clear contact paper. It's not really an adult thing, but maybe it will help you out.

Q: Do Australians have snow on their christmas cards?
As christmas is in their summer season, do they have snow and icicles etc on their cards and decorations? Or santa on the beach in his speados and shades?

A: I'm not Australian, but I am from New Zealand which is just a little further down, so same hemisphere. Some cards have tradition scenes with snow and all that, some have inside scenes with fireplaces with stockings, and all that general stuff which implys snow or cold weather. Some are more suited to our climate with beaches and stuff, and yes, sometimes santa at the beach jandles and sunglasses. I have yet to come across speedo santa.

Q: What should I do with my old Christmas Cards?
You know how family gives you christmas, birthday, valentins, and other cards. Do you keep them are do you throw them a way. If you keep them why do you? If you throw them a way why? What should I do with the one I have?

A: I keep my cards. Usually my family writes me messages on them, so they aren't just whatever hallmark thinks. It's good to have them, once a person dies. My mother has cards from her first Birthday, and one of them is from one of her cousins who died really young and really unfortunately. The card makes her happy. Reading cards from my now deceased Grandmother and Grandfather give me happy memories. It's like pictures, but I think better. And so messages can make you feel better even now. I have a sister whom I've never seen very much. She's always lived in Alabama with her mother, while I live in Ohio with my mother and father. she syas she's sorry she doesn't see me enough and that she'll try harder and that she loves me no matter that. So that makes me feel really nice.
